This present building was opened as an Intermediate School in 1896. In July 1892, the site was described as 'a field in the land of Coity Lower'. This land was donated by the Earl of Dunraven and the foundation stone was laid by him on 21st May 1894, the stone for the school coming from the Quarella Quarries. The ceremony attracted a large crowd and many notable people were present. The group travelled to and from the Town Hall accompanied by the band of the Rifle Volunteers.

| In the banquet that followed, Lord Dunraven spoke at length on the value of Education regarding it as an 'inestimable blessing and that every quality which makes a man a capable man, makes him also a capable citizen'. He charged future generations with the responsibility to make full and proper use of the facilities which had thus been provided and that the building should enjoy a 'long and honourable career'. In later years, the school became known as the County School, earned a reputation of high standing and became a focal point for a steady stream of scholars from Bridgend, the Valleys and the Vale. In 1935, it became a Grammar School for Girls and the grandmothers and mothers of many of our pupils attended here. | |||
